Maui Health's First Daisy Award Honoree Sarah Salmonese
Congratulations Sarah Salmonese, ICU RN on being the first recipient of the DAISY Award at Maui Health! The selection committee surprised Sarah this month with the award and a special presentation ceremony.
The DAISY Award is an international award that honors extraordinary nurses and the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day. There are about 4,900 hospitals internationally that participate in the program and we are so excited to provide this important recognition throughout 2022 and every year moving forward.
Director of Nursing Marian Horikawa-Barth shared that the committee received a number of nominations that are blinded and the committee read and scored each story. Read Sarah's nomination below:
Sarah Salmonese is an ICU nurse who always works with her heart on her sleeve. One day she was caring for an elderly patient who had a hard time walking or keeping balance on her own. The patient needed to go to the bathroom and so Sarah helped her. On the way back to the bed Sarah played some music and started to dance with the her. The patient had expressed how she loved to dance but Sarah didn't know how to waltz, so the patient taught her. They danced in the patient's room, her patient got some exercise and had fun at the same time. This little move made the day for this patient and for everyone who witnessed the love and caring act from nurse to patient.
Mahalo Sarah for caring for our community in the way that you do!
