Hometown Hero - Carolyn Caires
Hometown Hero Week 1 Winner - Carolyn Caires
Congratulations to our first Hometown Hero winner, Carolyn Caires! Carolyn was nominated for her dedication to sewing masks for not only her family and friends, but the whole community of Maui. With family at high risk and Carolyn being an essential worker, her family has been trying to stay safe throughout these trying times. Carolyn is a take charge, get it done, crafty organizer who can't sit on her hands when she sees a need. She sewed masks for friends and family, but saw the need was greater than just a few masks. To keep herself busy and lessen her worry, she sews masks and give them away to people for free. When she started this endeavor, she said, "No matter the cost, they have to be free to those in need." She carries them with her and when she sees someone in need, she offers them a mask, even the keiki. Her initial goal was 500 masks, but nearly 1000 adult and keiki masks later, she clearly isn't stopping anytime soon. She is driven by a deep maternal instinct to help others and her family is incredibly proud of her selflessness saying, "She's a superhero in my eyes; helping those stay safe, one mask at a time!" People have even started calling her "The Mask Lady."
She has helped so many people and organizations in our community including: Maui Humane Society, HARF, La'akea Village, Wailuku Court House staff, Wailuku & Kahului Safeway, Kahului Longs, Kiss FM, Dept of Health Food & Safety and Records Dept., Maui Health (Maui Memorial Medical Center), Central Automotive, Division of Vocational Rehab; Maui, Molokai, Honolulu & Kauai Branches, Mahi Pono, Miyaki Concrete, County of Public Works, Wailuku & Maui Lani Kaiser, Office Max, Wailuku Tax Office, Wailuku Welfare Office, Wailuku Unemployment Office, National Guard at the State Building, Upcountry Dog Park, DLNR, Kula Napa, Colleens Restaurant, Costco, Target, Walmart Staff, Kahului Bank of Hawaii, and SO many more!
Thank you Carolyn for the dedication you have shown to our community. Through your generosity and selfless acts of giving we are reminded of the importance of compassion for others and that true aloha spirit lives on in Maui County, even through the toughest times. You are a real life hero and we are forever grateful.
