MMMC Launches First Surgical Tech Trainee Program

Congratulations to Tyler, Ellen, Roselyn, and Valerie - our first Surgical Technician Trainee Program cohort at Maui Memorial Medical Center. In our continued efforts to "grow our own" and commitment to our team, MMMC started a 6-month program this month that will train these four current employees to move into the role of a surgical technician.

This specialized program will cover the fundamentals of the surgical technician including the perioperative environment, scrubbing, gowning & gloving, instruments, sutures, and many other operating room procedures and requirements.

MMMC's "grow our own" initiative supports the future sustainability of this specialty service and many other programs, for our hospital and the community of Maui by offering training and specialized education for current employees as well as Maui county residents. Other programs launched as part of this initiative include Kula Hospital’s Certified Nurse Aide paid training program, Maui Health’s partnership with UH Maui’s College of Nursing, as well as a number of advanced medical training programs offered to current Maui Health employees. Since Maui Health’s inception in July 2017, it has hired over 100 students from University of Hawaii Maui College Nursing Program.

“Maui Health recognizes the incredible talent we already have within our own walls here in Maui County and the value of keeping our nursing students here at home to provide health care to our own - and their own - community,” said Gary Kienbaum, Chief Nurse Executive of Maui Health. “We care for our patients like our own ‘ohana and when you’ve grown up here, live and work here, there is an inherent dedication and compassion for patients that are like extended family – and that just can’t be taught.”
