Q: Are heart attack patients still sent to Oahu for care?

No. Today, if you have a heart attack on Maui, you can be treated right here at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Not only does this eliminate the risks of flying patients during a heart attack, but it also means patients can be treated within the 90-minute window recommended by national guidelines.

If you have a heart problem, it's important to get the best care possible. Fortunately, if you live on Maui, you can get the best heart care without leaving the island. Maui Health has state-of-the-art equipment and a team of specialists who can treat you right here, close to home.

About a decade ago, this wasn’t the case. Maui was sending 30 to 40 heart attack patients to Honolulu each month. Since starting the interventional cardiology program at Maui Memorial Medical Center in 2010, we can now diagnose heart attacks, administer lifesaving medication, and clear blockages in patient’s arteries using stents and balloons. Those are minimally invasive procedures that involve threading a catheter into the body through a vein in the wrist or groin.

Cardiologists also work closely with Maui Memorial’s team of heart surgeons to respond quickly when the patient needs more serious intervention, like bypass surgery.

Treating heart attacks on Maui means we can deliver care much more quickly, saving lives. It also means that it’s much easier for patients to receive support from their family members and loved ones while they recover.

To learn more about keeping your heart in shape, join Maui Health virtually, as we host our 7th Annual Virtual Heart Failure Community Fair on Tuesday, February 8 from 5 to 6 pm. Listen and learn as heart experts share important information and tips to keep your heart in shape! The interactive event will be streamed live on Facebook. To register, visit mauihealth.org/heart.

And remember, if you think you may be having a heart attack, don’t hesitate or delay! Call 911 or come to the emergency department at Maui Memorial Medical Center right away. Every minute counts.
