Q: When my brother had knee replacement surgery, he flew to Honolulu to have it done. Now it's my turn. Do I have to go off island too?

Yes, you can get your joint replacement done on Maui! Surgeons at Maui Memorial Medical Center are now performing eight to 10 total joint replacements per week, including hip, knee, and shoulder replacement—triple the number they were performing two years ago.

In addition to being closer to family and friends, there are several other advantages to staying on Maui. Plane travel after surgery can increase the risk of stiffness and blood clots. Staying close to home also usually means a shorter hospital stay, and it gets people moving around much sooner, all of which speeds up recovery.

Maui has all the latest equipment for performing joint replacement surgeries, and our operating room meets or exceeds national benchmarks. Our infection rate, for example, is one of the lowest in the country, and we haven't had a post-surgical infection in a total joint replacement in more than two years. So patients should feel confident they'll receive the same quality of care here on island as they would if they traveled to Honolulu.
