Wailuku, Maui, HI (November 16, 2022) – Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC) is, once again, nationally recognized with an ‘A’ Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

MMMC has received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2022, following the same “A” Grade awarded in May for the spring of 2022. This national distinction recognizes MMMC’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital.

“Maui Health exists to provide exceptional health care for the people we serve with compassion, dignity, and respect,” said Michael Rembis, CEO of Maui Health. “Our teams are committed to the care, safety, and well-being of our patients and their hard work and commitment to improve quality is evident. I am proud of the efforts of our physicians, nurses, quality improvement department, and our entire team of employees who have worked to provide consistent, quality care, as demonstrated by our back-to-back Leapfrog “A” recognitions.”

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals throughout the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms among patients in their care.

“The true measure of greatness is to sustain excellence,” said Dr. Michael Shea, Maui Health’s Chief Medical Direct. “The entire Maui Health team – from our clinical team to our ancillary and leadership teams – are incredibly dedicated in providing the safest, highest quality of care, and I am proud to be a part of these amazing efforts.”

“I applaud the hospital leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. Your hospital team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
