From Kaahumanu Avenue, turn onto Maui Lani Parkway. Pass straight through the first traffic light, then take the first left into the clinic parking lot.

Traveling isn’t easy when you have a non-healing wound, especially if that wound is painful. So it’s good to know that if your doctor suggests having hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help heal your wound, you can get this treatment without leaving the island.

As part of our comprehensive wound care clinic, Maui Memorial Medical Center has two state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers for wound healing.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. The air pressure inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is about two and a half times greater than normal air pressure. This hyperbaric (or high pressure) dose of oxygen helps your blood carry more oxygen to your organs and tissues to promote wound healing. It also activates white blood cells to fight infection.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be used as part of the treatment for conditions, such as:

  • Slow-to-heal or non-healing wounds.
  • Foot or leg ulcers or wounds.
  • Non-healing surgical wounds.
  • Non-healing skin grafts or surgical flaps.
  • Symptoms occurring on or around a point of radiation (such as pain, rectal or bladder bleeding).
  • Bone infection, also called osteomyelitis.
  • Crush injuries.

What to expect at our hyperbaric oxygen treatment center

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy typically takes place five days a week for four to six weeks. Each session lasts about two hours. During your treatments, your comfort and safety are our team’s highest priority.

Our hyperbaric treatment chambers are large and comfortable. Just outside each chamber is a TV, so you can watch a favorite show or a movie during treatment. You can also take a nap if you want to.

Here are some safety guidelines to be aware of:

  • We will give you a hospital gown to wear in the chamber. For your safety, we ask that you don’t wear or bring cosmetics, perfumes, hair preparations, deodorants, wigs, jewelry or electronic devices into the chamber.
  • Most pacemakers are allowed in the chamber.
  • The hyperbaric technologist will need to know if you are taking any medications, including non-prescription drugs.
  • You shouldn’t drink alcohol or carbonated beverages for four hours prior to treatment.
  • Tobacco products interfere with the body's ability to transport oxygen. If you use tobacco, work with your doctor on techniques to help you quit during treatment.

Remember: Following your treatment plan is the single most important factor in your healing.
